“I am deeply saddened by reports of the tragic killing of some hunters in Edo State. My heartfelt condolences go out to their families and loved ones.
“This unfortunate incident requires a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation to identify and prosecute the perpetrators. The protection of innocent lives must always be prioritized, and I urge authorities to act swiftly and firmly to stop the recurrence of jungle justice.
“Justice must not only be served but must also be visibly upheld to restore public trust in our security institutions,” Atiku stated on his Facebook page on Friday.
The statement from Atiku follows the extrajudicial killing of seven travelers in Uromi, Edo State. The victims, reportedly of northern origin, were attacked and burned by an angry mob who suspected them of being criminals.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable. Through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor condemned the barbaric act, allegedly carried out by members of a local vigilante group, and urged the community to cooperate with security agencies in identifying the culprits.
