Nigerians are expressing diverse opinions regarding the recent legal proceedings and bail of celebrity businessman Pascal Okechukwu, widely known as Cubana Chief Priest, concerning allegations of Naira abuse. According to Naija News, Cubana Chief Priest entered a plea of ‘not guilty’ to charges of tampering and abusing the national currency during his appearance at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The socialite and entrepreneur faced three counts of Naira abuse related to his actions at various social gatherings. He was brought before Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court in Lagos by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Following his plea of not guilty, Cubana Chief Priest was granted bail in the sum of ₦10 million with two sureties of the same amount by the court.
This development has prompted comparisons to the case of another controversial figure, Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, who was recently convicted and sentenced to six months in prison for a similar offense with no option of a fine.
The contrasting outcomes in the cases of Bobrisky and Cubana Chief Priest have sparked discussions among Nigerians. Many have taken to social media platforms to express their views on the court’s decision.
For instance, @Acedouglas1 suggested that Bobrisky’s legal team may have inadvertently disadvantaged him by advising a guilty plea, while others like @47kasz questioned the discrepancy in sentencing between the two cases.
Meanwhile, @Olamide0fficial remarked on the disparate treatment, pointing out the disparity in consequences for similar offenses.
However, @dondekojo observed the differential treatment by authorities, noting the absence of a mugshot for Cubana Chief Priest and minimal public scrutiny compared to Bobrisky’s case.
Similarly, @AfamDeluxo speculated on the underlying motives behind Bobrisky’s conviction, implying a hidden agenda by the authorities.
Conversely, @Shehusky interpreted the differing outcomes as evidence of a larger conspiracy against Bobrisky, reinforcing previous suspicions.
In light of these reactions, it appears that Nigerians are divided on the fairness and transparency of the legal system, with many questioning the consistency and impartiality of judicial decisions.
