In a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria during a media session at his Ikoyi office on August 9, 2024, George criticized the efforts to drive the Igbo community out of Lagos, emphasizing that such sentiments are misguided and counterproductive.
George, a native of Lagos, expressed disbelief at the campaign, asserting that it does not reflect the true spirit of the city. “Why should we ask the Igbo people to leave?” he questioned. “We have coexisted with them for years. I have known them, and we have shared many experiences together.”
He criticized the campaigners, suggesting they are not true Lagosians and do not understand the city’s inclusive culture. “Lagos welcomes traders and residents alike. The people proposing this nonsense have no real connection to Lagos,” George argued.
Recalling historical ties, George mentioned Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, an Igbo leader who worked closely with Sir Herbert Macaulay, a key figure in Lagos’s political history. He emphasized that the Igbo community has been an integral part of Lagos since its creation in 1967 and has made significant contributions to the city’s development.
George further condemned the hate-driven campaign, noting that those spreading such messages are likely outsiders who have found refuge in Lagos. He urged them to desist from promoting divisive rhetoric, stressing that the Igbo community plays a vital role in the economic and social fabric of the city.
The recent online campaign, especially prominent during the #EndBadGovernmentInNigeria protests, had called for the expulsion of Igbo people from Lagos. President Bola Tinubu responded to these calls by denouncing the campaign and affirming that Nigeria has no place for ethnic intolerance.
