The former PDP Deputy National Chairman criticized the government’s inconsistent stance on the removal of the subsidy for premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. He said the ongoing confusion surrounding the subsidy issue has left Nigerians in the dark about the true situation.

Reports suggest that there is ongoing debate about whether the Federal Government has fully removed the subsidy, as initially announced by President Bola Tinubu in May 2023. On June 5, 2024, Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, claimed on X.com that the government was still covertly subsidizing fuel.

At his office in Ikoyi, Lagos State, George emphasized that Nigerians deserve a clear understanding of the situation. “The Federal Government needs to be transparent. One day we are told the subsidy is in place, and the next it’s removed—Nigerians deserve to know the truth,” he said.

He also criticized the decision to sell crude oil to Dangote’s refinery in naira, calling it detrimental to the country’s already fragile economy. “Selling crude oil in naira is a disastrous policy. Crude oil is a major source of foreign currency that supports our external reserves. With our reserves already depleted, this move could severely harm our economy,” George warned.
