Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has strongly condemned the recent killings in Bokkos Local Government Area, describing them as an act of genocide. He alleged that the violence was a deliberate attempt to impoverish the community and drive the indigenous people away from their ancestral homes.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Monday, Mutfwang said the attacks, which occurred over the past two weeks, were unprovoked and targeted innocent, vulnerable residents. He noted that the pattern of violence is disturbingly consistent with previous years, often escalating during farming seasons.
“I say it without apology—what transpired in Bokkos over the last fortnight is nothing short of genocide,” the governor declared. “There’s been no indication that these attacks are politically driven. What we’ve observed, year after year, is a cycle: attacks at the beginning of the farming season, a lull during cultivation, and another wave of violence as harvest approaches.”
Mutfwang believes the sustained attacks are part of a well-orchestrated plot to keep the people of Bokkos in chronic poverty, suggesting land seizure as a motive. He explained that displaced communities often return to find their lands occupied.
Despite the grim circumstances, the governor remains resolute. “I refuse to be overwhelmed. If anything, I’m more determined to dig deep and find sustainable solutions,” he asserted, adding that his administration is actively reviewing strategies and welcoming new ideas to tackle the crisis.
He emphasized that justice will not be sacrificed. “We will not be broken. Yes, we are frustrated, but we will not give up. We need the collaboration of the federal government to bring these criminals to justice,” Mutfwang stated.
He confirmed that arrests have been made and that some key suspects are already providing valuable intelligence to security agencies. “This time, there will be consequences. Perpetrators must face the full wrath of the law,” he assured.
Reflecting on the progress the state had made before the attacks, Mutfwang noted, “Just months ago, Nigerians praised Plateau for its return to peace. This incident is a setback—but not our defeat. We will rebuild and move forward.”
While he acknowledged the urgent need to support victims, Mutfwang clarified that compensation isn’t immediately on the table due to the suddenness of the crisis. However, he pledged to reach out to relevant agencies and the federal government for assistance in relief efforts.
The governor also raised alarm over the growing circulation of arms in Nigeria, blaming porous borders for the inflow of illegal weapons. “This is a national security issue. We must urgently address the spread of arms to prevent future atrocities like those in Bokkos,” he warned.
