A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Gwale Constituency, Hon. Mai Rigar Fata, who represents Gwale Local Government Area—the same constituency as Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf—was formally received into the NDC on Thursday by former Kano State Governor and party leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Maitama residence in Abuja.
The defection signals a new wave of political realignment in Kano State as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Welcoming the new entrants, Kwankwaso described their move as a major boost to the party’s grassroots strength and overall political structure in Kano State, expressing confidence that they would contribute significantly to its expansion.
Mai Rigar Fata was initially elected into the Kano State House of Assembly in 2023 under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which is closely associated with the Kwankwasiyya political movement led by Kwankwaso. He later moved to the APC alongside Governor Yusuf before his latest defection.
Reports indicate that his decision to leave the APC was influenced by his inability to secure the party’s ticket for re-election into the State Assembly.
His return to the Kwankwaso-led political bloc is expected to further reshape the political landscape in Gwale, a key constituency in Kano State.
Other political figures who joined him in defecting to the NDC include Hon. Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, former Vice Chairman of Gwale Local Government Area, and Malam Mahadi Isa Umar.
The development comes shortly after a Federal High Court ruling invalidated certain provisions of electoral guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission, a decision widely interpreted by political observers as potentially easing restrictions on party switching.
Reacting to the ruling, the spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, predicted an increase in defections from the ruling party, suggesting that more politicians may soon explore alternative platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.
