BREAKING: Army Dismisses Speculations Surrounding COAS’ DeathThe Nigerian Army on Sunday refuted claims circulating about the death of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. The journalist’s post stated: “The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has died in an undisclosed hospital overseas from stage three cancer, according to a senior government official.” It further suggested that the news of his death was being concealed due to lobbying by certain generals seeking his position.
Born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, Lagbaja was appointed as the 27th Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023.
In response to the post, the Nigerian Army labeled the information as fake news. However, sources within the Army Headquarters confirmed to our correspondent that the Army Chief is critically ill. One source emphasized, “COAS is not dead. He is critically ill at the moment. We should be praying for him and not spreading rumors of his death.”
Another source mentioned that Lagbaja is currently out of the country for medical treatment, adding, “I have not heard of his death from anyone close to him. There’s no way such information could be hidden.”
Attempts to reach Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the director of Army Public Relations, were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off and he had not responded to messages regarding the situation.
