Breaking Barriers: Bricklayer Shatters Family Tradition With First-Class Degree

Toyinbo Hezekiah, a 30-year-old commercial motorcyclist and bricklayer, emerged as the top student in the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, graduating with a first-class honor. In an interview with ABDULLATEEF FOWEWE, he shares his journey of pursuing education at his age and how he managed to achieve academic excellence despite challenges.

Initially, Hezekiah didn’t anticipate achieving a perfect cumulative grade point average when he began his degree program. Coming from Igude, a village in Ogun State, he worked as a commercial motorcycle rider and bricklayer to support his education. His primary goal was to become a graduate, given his academic background and financial constraints. However, his academic journey took a surprising turn when he achieved a GPA of 5.0 in the first semester of his third year, motivating him to strive for a first-class honor. With dedication and hard work, he attained a CGPA of 4.55 by the second semester of his final year.

Throughout his educational journey, Hezekiah displayed a strong passion for academics, consistently excelling since his early school years. Despite facing numerous challenges during his university years, such as financial difficulties and balancing work with studies, he remained resilient and focused on his goals. His upbringing in a farming-oriented village initially didn’t prioritize education, but as he progressed through each stage, his determination to succeed academically grew stronger.

When asked about his parents’ reaction to his academic achievement, Hezekiah acknowledged their limited understanding of formal education but expressed confidence that they would celebrate his accomplishment. As the first person in his family to pursue higher education, he understands the significance of his achievement, even if it may not be fully grasped by his parents.

Managing his education while working as a commercial motorcyclist and bricklayer required careful planning and dedication. Hezekiah credits his faith in God for giving him strength and resilience, and he made use of every available opportunity to study, particularly during breaks and strikes. His most memorable moment in school was achieving a 5.00 GPA in his third year.

Since graduating, Hezekiah has been engaged in farm work, rearing various breeds of chicken, and offering free consultation to aspiring farmers. He continues to learn from experienced farmers, recognizing the value of practical experience in agriculture.

Despite the challenges he faced, Hezekiah maintains that his main goal was to obtain his degree, and he would have been content with a second-class honor if he hadn’t achieved a first-class. He remains grateful for the opportunity to pursue education and looks forward to making a meaningful contribution to the agricultural sector.
