Following the recent announcement by the Federal Government regarding the forthcoming release of a new National Identification Number, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has offered additional insights into the proposed ID system.
In a statement issued by Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, the Commission revealed that the new National ID Card will be introduced as a unified, convenient, and versatile General Multipurpose Card (GMPC), aiming to eliminate the necessity for multiple cards.
According to NIMC, the GMPC will serve various purposes, including financial transactions, accessing government services, and facilitating travel.
Collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System, NIMC is actively working on integrating payment and financial functionalities into the new card, leveraging the AFRIGO card scheme, which is domestically powered by NIBSS.
Prospective applicants will be required to link their National Identification Number (NIN) through an online self-service portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks to apply for the card.
The issuance process will be conducted through applicants’ banks, following established protocols for the issuance of debit/credit cards. Applicants can collect their cards from designated centers or opt for delivery to a specified location at an additional cost, which will be borne by the applicants.
