Breaking: Court To Rule Today On Jonathan’s Eligibility For 2027 Presidential Race
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja is set to deliver judgment today, May 26, 2026, in a case challenging the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Justice Peter Lifu will determine whether Jonathan, who has previously taken the oath of office twice before leaving power in 2015, is constitutionally qualified to seek the presidency again and be sworn in if elected.
The ruling comes shortly after a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, granted Jonathan a waiver to emerge as the party’s sole presidential candidate for 2027.
The suit was filed by Johnmary Jideobi, who is asking the court to bar Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate for the upcoming election. He is also seeking an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting, processing, or publishing Jonathan’s name as a candidate.
Justice Lifu scheduled today for judgment after hearing final arguments from both the plaintiff and defence counsel.
The plaintiff is urging the court to interpret Sections 1(1), (2), (3), and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution to determine whether Jonathan remains eligible to run for the office of President again.
The case comes amid renewed political moves within the Turaki-led PDP faction to position Jonathan as its candidate for the 2027 general elections.
