Armed assailants suspected to be cultists have tragically ended the life of Endwell Awunze in Ula-Pata-Ahoada, Ahaoda Local Government Area of Rivers State. Awunze, known for his opposition to cultism and violent crime in Okporowo community, reportedly fell victim to a targeted attack while returning from a protest against the tenure extension of a local government chairman. Riding a motorcycle, he was ambushed by three gunmen along Ula-Pata road, resulting in his immediate death. The motorcycle driver also sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving medical treatment. As of Wednesday morning, Awunze’s body remained at the crime scene.

The incident has heightened tensions amid an ongoing local government leadership crisis in Rivers State. Concerns have been raised by the Centre for Basic Rights Protection And Accountability Campaign about the potential for increased criminal activities amidst the political turmoil. Comrade Prince Wiro, National Coordinator of the organization, expressed apprehension over the situation, urging politicians to operate within legal boundaries to prevent further escalation of violence. The Rivers State Police Command has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
