Tragedy struck on Monday afternoon when a suspected hit-and-run driver caused the deaths of two male travelers, Yahaya Suleiman and Emeka, on the Kara Market overhead bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident, reported by PUNCH Online, occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. when the driver lost control of the vehicle, colliding with three pedestrians who were waiting to board a bus.
Eyewitness Issa, a local pure water seller, recounted the harrowing event, noting that the speeding vehicle struck the pedestrians, resulting in two of them falling from the bridge due to the impact. The driver fled the scene immediately after the collision.
According to Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, both Suleiman and Emeka succumbed to their injuries shortly after being rushed to the Lagos State Emergency Clinic at the old toll gate in Ojota. Meanwhile, the third pedestrian, identified as Ishola, sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
Authorities have taken the deceased to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital for preservation and autopsy, and efforts are underway to notify their families. The police are actively pursuing the identification and apprehension of the driver responsible for this tragic incident.
This event adds to a concerning trend in the region, with several fatal hit-and-run incidents reported on major highways in Ogun State since the beginning of the year. The local community and law enforcement are increasingly concerned about road safety, urging vigilance and responsible driving to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
