Chikaosolu Ojukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), revealed that Achimugu, who voluntarily returned from London, was arrested by EFCC officials at 5 a.m. upon her arrival at the airport.
Earlier, Achimugu’s legal team had informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that she would appear before the EFCC on Tuesday, April 29, in connection with an ongoing investigation into allegations of money laundering and criminal conspiracy.
Ojukwu argued that the arrest violated the spirit of the court’s earlier undertaking, adding that Achimugu has since gone on a hunger strike, labeling her as a “prisoner of conscience” and asserting that the development undermines the rule of law.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that Achimugu was expected to appear before the Commission as ordered by the court, but remarked that the agency would provide a formal response regarding the arrest at the airport in due course.
Achimugu’s legal team, led by Kehinde Ogunwumiju and Chikaosolu Ojukwu, had previously filed a fundamental human rights enforcement suit against six security agencies, including the EFCC, Nigeria Police Force, and others, in a bid to prevent her arrest.
The EFCC had declared Achimugu wanted on March 28 over links to money laundering and criminal conspiracy related to the controversial MBA Trading and Capital Limited scheme. In response, she filed a suit seeking to prevent the EFCC from detaining her.
In its counter-affidavit, the EFCC explained that Achimugu had violated the terms of her administrative bail by failing to attend subsequent invitations. Justice Inyang Ekwo ruled that Achimugu should appear before the EFCC on April 29 and directed the Commission to return to court on April 30 to report on her compliance.
