The Enugu State Police Command has issued a renewed warning against the sale and unauthorized use of firecrackers in the state in anticipation of the Christmas festivities.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Sunday via X, Commissioner of Police CP Kanayo Uzuegbu emphasized that the ban on firecrackers remains “in full force.” He sternly cautioned both dealers and users of fireworks to “desist forthwith,” citing the potential dangers associated with the use of explosive devices such as knockout bangers and firecrackers.
CP Uzuegbu highlighted the serious risks involved, including the facilitation of criminal activities, causing injuries, and the possibility of fire outbreaks. He pointed out the increased likelihood of fireworks contributing to crime, escalating tension, and posing hazards to human life and property, particularly during the dry harmattan season.
The Commissioner warned that “violators would face the full weight of the law” and urged parents to prevent their children from purchasing or igniting fireworks. CP Uzuegbu issued directives to Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and heads of Tactical Units to “enforce the ban to the letter” and ensure tight security during the Christmas season.
“We will not tolerate any security breaches in their jurisdictions,” he asserted. In extending seasonal greetings, the CP wished the citizens of Enugu “a merry Christmas and fruitful new year” but emphasized the need for vigilance. He urged the public to report any criminal activities promptly by calling emergency hotlines at 08032003702, 08075380883, 08086671202, or 08098880172, and encouraged sending emails to infoenugupolice@gmail.com.The statement underscored the importance of cooperation from the community to facilitate “a safe, peaceful, and enjoyable holiday for all Enugu residents.
