Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Zamfara State, concerned about the prolonged closure of 168 schools, are calling for a more robust effort by security forces to combat the escalating threat posed by bandits.
The Safe Schools’ Technical Team emphasizes that reopening the 168 schools hinges on an intensified security campaign in the identified red zones. Hashim Ahmed, the team’s chairman, made this plea during an advocacy visit to Commissioner of Police Muhammad Danlijam at the Command Headquarters in Gusau, the state capital.
Ahmed highlighted the grave impact of bandit attacks on three public secondary schools in the state since the onset of banditry in 2011. Government Girls Day Secondary School, Jangebe, in Talata Mafara Local Government Area, Government Day Secondary School Kaya in Maradun Local Government Area, and Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Moriki in Zurmi Local Government Area, have all experienced serious security incidents. Additionally, five schools have been transformed into Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps.
In response to these challenges, the Zamfara State government took the decision to close all primary and secondary schools on September 11, 2021. Although some schools reopened for learning on January 17, 2022, those in the red zone have remained shut.
The Civil Society Organizations, through the Safe Schools Technical Team, are urging government at all levels to provide adequate security to schools lacking the presence of military, police, or personnel from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). This is seen as crucial to safeguarding the well-being of students and teachers, facilitating a safe resumption of learning.
Commissioner of Police Muhammad Danlijam responded by assuring the CSOs of the state police command’s commitment to collaborating with relevant groups to ensure comprehensive security, not only in schools but throughout the state.
