The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, made the announcement on Tuesday in Abuja. He revealed that the operation, backed by hybrid forces, air components, and other security agencies, was launched based on credible intelligence.
According to Kangye, Danbokkolo—infamous for his reign of terror in Eastern Sokoto—suffered fatal gunshot wounds during a fierce gun battle with Nigerian troops and died on Monday as a result of his injuries.
He noted, “Yellow Danbokkolo, a notorious terrorist kingpin who had tormented communities in Eastern Sokoto for years, was critically injured during the clash and later succumbed to his wounds.”
The military described Danbokkolo as even more feared than Bello Turji, another infamous terror leader still on the run. He was allegedly the mastermind behind the December 2021 massacre in Shinkafi LGA, Zamfara State, where scores of travelers were burned alive.
Kangye added, “He was widely regarded as more dangerous than Bello Turji.”
The statement also disclosed disturbing details about Danbokkolo’s lifestyle, claiming he relied heavily on pentazocine, a powerful painkiller, to maintain the stamina for his brutal operations.
“The eliminated kingpin was known to consume large doses of pentazocine to sustain his cruelty and criminal acts,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, troops are intensifying efforts to capture Bello Turji, who is believed to be in hiding.
“The hunt for Bello Turji continues with renewed determination,” Kangye confirmed.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace in the region and urged Nigerians to support ongoing security efforts by sharing timely and accurate intelligence.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain dedicated to bringing normalcy to every part of the country. We call on citizens to collaborate with security agencies by providing relevant information,” the statement concluded.
