During the virtual event, Senator Shekarau highlighted the pivotal role that socio-economic conditions play in determining the well-being of citizens. These conditions encompass various aspects, including income levels, job opportunities, safety and security, access to healthcare and education, and reliable electricity.

The conference, themed “Nigeria’s Social Economic Conditions: Realities and Remedies,” featured notable figures such as the Emir of Keffi in Nasarawa State, Dr. Shehu Chindo Yamusa III, President of IIUM Alumni, Nigeria Chapter, Professor Bashiru Adeniyi Omipidan, and Br. Illmyzat Bin Ismail, Director of IIUM Alumni Relations Division.

Represented by renowned economist Dr. Muhammad Sagagi, Senator Shekarau expressed concern over Nigeria’s poor socio-economic condition despite its abundant resources. He lamented the leaders’ inability to provide the expected development and living standards for Nigerians. Senator Shekarau pointed out the nation’s low per-capita income as a significant obstacle to development.

Highlighting the grim statistics, he stated that Nigeria currently has over 23 million unemployed individuals, with an additional 20 million underemployed, totaling approximately 43 million people facing employment challenges. The former governor underscored the severity of youth unemployment, emphasizing that economic growth has been both inconsistent and insufficient to address the pressing issues.

Examining economic growth rates from 1999 to 2024, Senator Shekarau noted that the average rate was a mere 2.4%, with the highest recorded at 6.2% in 2014 and the lowest at minus 1.92%. He argued that such growth rates are insufficient to create jobs, alleviate poverty, or establish the desired socio-economic conditions in the country. Senator Shekarau concluded that addressing the character of economic growth is crucial to combating job losses, poverty, and the state’s inability to provide adequate socio-economic conditions for its citizens.
