Starmer announced his resignation on Monday during an emotional farewell speech outside 10 Downing Street, where he reflected on his time in office and expressed gratitude to the British people for the opportunity to serve.

Addressing the nation before departing Downing Street, the outgoing prime minister said he was proud of his administration’s accomplishments and believed it was the right time to leave office.

“I go with good grace, I go with a smile and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” Starmer said.

He added, “My work is done,” signalling the end of his time in government.

Starmer also expressed confidence in his successor, Andy Burnham, and pledged his full support as the new leader assumes office.

Following his farewell remarks, Starmer proceeded to Buckingham Palace, where he formally tendered his resignation to King Charles III.

Buckingham Palace later confirmed the development in an official statement, saying:

“Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience with The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.”

The palace further noted that Lady Starmer was also received by the King.

With Starmer’s departure, Andy Burnham, who was elected Labour Party leader on Friday, was invited by King Charles III to form a new government, officially making him the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister.

Burnham is expected to deliver his inaugural address outside 10 Downing Street before unveiling his cabinet.

Ahead of the transition, the first major change in government emerged with the resignation of Prisons Minister Lord Timpson, signalling the beginning of Burnham’s efforts to reshape his administration and appoint a new governing team.
