The closure is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, just two weeks after the runway was reopened following an extensive 11-month maintenance period.

In a memo dated February 28, 2025, FAAN’s Head of Operations, Mrs. J.U. Nwosu, informed the Airport Manager (AM)/Regional General Manager (RGM) for the Southwest Region about the planned closure under the subject “Total Closure of Runway 18R/36L.”

The memo stated, “Runway 18R/36L will be closed for rehabilitation (asphalt phase) at A2 Taxiway-link. The closure is necessary due to protruding construction equipment, which could pose a hazard to landing and departing aircraft.”

FAAN confirmed that the closure will take place on March 3 and 4, 2025, and during this period, runway 18L/36R will remain operational.

Departments affected by the closure have been advised to conduct regular inspections of their facilities to ensure necessary precautions are in place, including grass management, enhanced security, and continuous surveillance.

The memo emphasized, “All measures associated with a total runway closure will be applied, making facility protection a priority.”

It can be recalled that in March 2023, FAAN temporarily shut down Runway 18R/36L for maintenance, initially expecting the repairs to last eight weeks. However, the work extended beyond the timeline, disrupting air traffic and airline operations.

During that period, both international and domestic flights had to rely on Runway 18L/36R, which is primarily designed for domestic use and is shorter in length.

With the recent reopening of Links 2 and 3 of the taxiway, international airlines now have an alternative route alongside Runway 18L/36R.
