This ruling will remain in force until Governor Siminalayi Fubara discontinues all illegal, unconstitutional, and unlawful activities.
The court further declared that funds would only be released to Fubara’s administration once a valid Appropriation Law is passed under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule.
Delivering the judgment on Friday, Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim also ordered the 27 lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume their legislative functions immediately.
The political crisis between former Governor Nyesom Wike and Governor Fubara had led to the defection of 27 legislators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). As a result, their seats were declared vacant, and Amaewhule was removed as Speaker under Fubara’s administration.
Subsequently, Oko Jombo, backed by Fubara, was installed as Speaker.
Reacting to the Supreme Court’s verdict, Wike asserted that the ruling signified the need to curb impunity in Rivers State.
Meanwhile, political commentator Deji Adeyanju, in a Facebook post, stated: “I have not yet read the Supreme Court’s judgment on Rivers State, so I cannot comment on it. However, I strongly urge Governor Fubara to stand firm against Wike and render him politically irrelevant by 2027.”
