The announcement was made on Friday through a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade. He revealed that Prince Owoade’s selection followed extensive consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the revered Oyo kingmakers.

“After thorough consultations and divinations, the Oyomesi recommended Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade, and Governor Seyi Makinde has approved him as the new Alaafin of Oyo,” the statement confirmed.

Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, highlighted that this appointment resolves the disputes and controversies that arose after the passing of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who died on April 22, 2022.

“This decision ends the socio-legal challenges that have persisted since the demise of Oba Adeyemi. We urge the people of Oyo State to rally behind the new Alaafin and celebrate this momentous occasion,” Ojo stated.

Oyelade expressed optimism about the reign of the new monarch, emphasizing hopes for peace, unity, and development within the Oyo Kingdom.

“We are confident that his reign will bring harmony and progress to the Oyo Kingdom while upholding the esteemed legacy of the Alaafin institution,” Oyelade added.

The government called on all residents of Oyo State to extend their support to the new Alaafin as he begins his reign over the historic kingdom.
