US Hands Over $52.88 Million Recovered Diezani Assets To Nigeria

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, announced the recovery during a formal signing ceremony of the asset return agreement in Abuja.

Fagbemi stated that $50 million of the recovered funds will be allocated through the World Bank for rural electrification projects, while the remaining $2.88 million will go towards the International Institute of Justice to support the justice system and anti-corruption initiatives.

“This asset return marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between Nigeria and the United States to fight corruption and uphold the rule of law,” Fagbemi said.

He highlighted that the recovery aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to combating corruption and ensuring the effective use of public funds.

US Ambassador Advocates for Transparency

In his statement, United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, called on the Nigerian government to ensure proper oversight and utilization of the recovered assets for the benefit of its citizens.

“The Ministry of Justice must ensure these funds are managed transparently and effectively to improve the lives of Nigerians,” Mills emphasized.
