Accompanied by other members of the State Assembly, Meranda met with the GAC at Lagos House, Marina, on Tuesday to provide updates on recent events in the legislature and seek the council’s blessings.
Speaking after the meeting, Meranda explained that the visit aimed to inform the GAC about the circumstances surrounding the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and her subsequent emergence as the new Speaker.
“We came to brief them about what transpired at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessings, which we have received,” she said.
Meranda’s election follows the impeachment of Obasa, who was removed on Monday by over two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly. His ousting was linked to allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement.
Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency I, was first elected to the House in 2007 and served as Speaker since June 2015. His impeachment marks the conclusion of nearly a decade-long tenure as the leader of the legislative house.
Previously serving as Obasa’s deputy, Meranda now holds the distinction of being the first woman to lead the Lagos State House of Assembly.
