The incident occurred near the construction site of a flyover in the Wunti area of Bauchi City.
Alhassan recounted the events to Leadership, describing how he was approached by a motorcyclist, later identified as a police officer, who attempted to stop him without any valid reason. When he did not comply, as he was unfamiliar with the motorcyclist, the officer discharged a weapon, hitting him on the head with a teargas canister, causing severe injuries and igniting a fire within his vehicle.
He explained that the officer initially signalled for him to halt, but he continued driving, concerned for his safety. Once he slowed down in a more populated area, the officer obstructed his vehicle and fired, causing blood to flow from his head.
Residents who recognized Alhassan helped extinguish the flames in his car. In his rush to flee, the police officer abandoned a bag containing items later confirmed to belong to a police officer, including a cold-weather jacket, teargas canisters, and an identification card. This evidence was later taken to the GRA Police Station in Bauchi.
After the incident, Alhassan received treatment at the Teaching Hospital and was discharged once his condition stabilized. He expressed his frustration and called for a thorough investigation into the unprovoked assault to ensure justice is served.
His vehicle, which was entirely consumed by fire inside, remains at the police station as evidence. Alhassan emphasized his lack of knowledge regarding the motive behind the attack and urged a comprehensive inquiry to bring the responsible officer to justice.
Thomas Goni, the zonal police public relations officer (ZPPRO), confirmed the occurrence and assured the public that the situation is being treated with the utmost seriousness. He acknowledged the concern the event had generated within the community and pledged a thorough, unbiased investigation.
Goni also confirmed that the implicated officer has been identified and will face disciplinary actions in line with police regulations. Additionally, he emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining high standards and accountability.
He assured the public that ongoing initiatives are being implemented to review police training programs and protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. This effort is aimed at ensuring officers handle situations with professionalism, respect, and in accordance with community expectations.
