The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has asserted that President Bola Tinubu’s recently submitted 2024 budget to the National Assembly is designed to perpetuate the impoverishment of the populace. In a statement titled ‘The Appropriation Bill: Seeing Beyond Semantics,’ the National Chairman of the PRP, Falalu Bello, cautioned Nigerians against placing any optimism in the 2024 budget. While acknowledging that the budget’s statistics and assumptions may seem favorable at first glance, Bello contended that a closer examination of its underlying assumptions reveals the administration’s lack of readiness for nation-building.
Bello expressed the view that the government remains entrenched in the past, safeguarding the interests of a few oligarchs without charting a course towards the prosperous future desired by Nigerians. He remarked, “Indeed, this government is still a relic of the past that is jealously protecting the few oligarchs as it does not have a path to the good future we seek as a nation.”
The PRP leader criticized the 2024 budget for its sectoral allocation of funds, describing it as indicative of the government’s limited vision, deceptive revenue generation tactics, and a lack of strategic planning to lift the nation out of its challenges. He argued that the budget merely serves as a facade, glorifying mediocrity and contributing to the continued impoverishment of the people.
Bello expressed hope that the Town Hall Meetings conducted by the two Chambers of the National Assembly would provide an opportunity to address the concerns raised by the PRP and other Nigerians. He urged corrective measures to create a more promising and welfare-oriented future for the country, stating, “It’s our hope that the Town Hall Meetings by the two Chambers of National Assembly will serve as an avenue to hear from Nigerians and to redress some of the issues raised by us and many other concerned Nigerians so that we may have a decent place to call our country.
