Currently, over a thousand Nigerians find themselves stranded in the UK, having obtained visas based on falsified employment letters. These victims, having invested significant sums, as much as $10,000 each, are now facing rejection by organizations in the UK as the letters were not authentic.

Mr. Laurent De Boeck, the Chief of Mission at IOM, disclosed this information during a press conference in Abuja. He expressed the plight of those stranded individuals, highlighting financial losses and the emotional toll on families. De Boeck also emphasized the IOM’s commitment to collaborating with various countries, including Italy, Spain, Belgium, France, and others, to establish legitimate migration pathways.

On the issue of displacement, De Boeck noted a 30 percent annual increase over the past five years in several states of the North West, with Zamfara being the most affected due to banditry and other crimes. He mentioned that IOM, in 2023, played a crucial role in addressing the shelter needs of conflict-affected individuals, implementing emergency and durable housing solutions.

Additionally, the IOM has identified and supported victims of trafficking, focusing on vulnerable groups such as survivors of gender-based violence, persons with disabilities, and unaccompanied and separated children. The organization facilitated the return of 4,431 Nigerians in collaboration with the Federal Government and supported their reintegration into socio-economic opportunities.

In 2023, IOM’s Migration Health initiatives included over 260,000 Pre-Departure Medical Health Assessments, diagnosis and referral of 166 migrants with tuberculosis, administration of 15,000 vaccine doses, and the renovation of three public hospitals, showcasing the organization’s dedication to comprehensive healthcare.
