Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has issued a directive to the State Ministry of Transport to implement a weighbridge system, aiming to regulate the activities of truck drivers on the Maiduguri-Dikwa-Gandoru/Ngala Road. Governor Zulum, who recently visited Gamboru, expressed concern over the extensive damage caused to the Federal road by trucks exceeding weight limits, labeling such actions as “economic sabotage.” In response to these challenges, the governor proposed the installation of truck scales in strategic locations, including Maiduguri, Dikwa, and Gamboru towns.

Transport organizations, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), welcomed the governor’s initiative. They pledged their support and cooperation, commending Zulum for his dedication to enhancing transportation within the state. The representatives assured that their unions would take necessary measures to ensure compliance with the established weight restrictions.

The deteriorating condition of the road has raised security concerns, with recent incidents involving insurgents planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the route. Governor Zulum’s intervention through the implementation of a weighbridge system aims to address both the economic and security issues associated with overloaded trucks on this crucial transportation corridor.
