Breaking News: Lagos Pensioners Urge Forensic Investigation Into CPS Implementation, Bemoan Unsettled Benefits
Pensioners in Lagos State are urging a thorough investigation into the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in the region. This plea comes in the wake of their grievances over the accumulation of unpaid pension benefits dating back to 2020. The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Contributory Pension Scheme arm, Omisande Michael, voiced these concerns during the latest quarterly prayer retreat for 2023.
Michael acknowledged the challenges faced by pensioners throughout the tumultuous year of 2023, citing losses of lives, health struggles, neglect, and housing difficulties. Despite the hardships, he expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for being responsive to their concerns. He also commended Commissioner Ayantayo Afolabi for his unwavering dedication to pensioner issues, praising the supportive members of the State House of Assembly.
However, Michael emphasized that the challenges confronting pensioners were substantial. He reiterated the urgent need for addressing issues such as the immediate settlement of outstanding pension arrears from 2020 onwards, declaring a state of emergency on pension matters, establishing a committee to review CPS implementation shortcomings, and conducting a forensic investigation into CPS implementation in Lagos State. He stressed the importance of implementing the findings and recommendations arising from such an inquiry.
The pensioners further demanded the creation of a Special Adviser’s office dedicated to pension matters, formation of a governing board to regulate LASPEC activities, and prioritizing pensioners in welfare packages, especially in health, transportation, and palliatives. Michael underscored the skyrocketing cost of drugs in the state, appealing to the Almighty for intervention in their plight.
