He said:
“As you can see, I’m alive. I’m not dead, so there’s no need for fear. They attacked my convoy on their way back around Umuoji. They noticed some vehicles speeding toward them, which later reversed, chased after them, and began shooting.

“The attackers wore police and army uniforms. My convoy driver tried to outmaneuver them until they ran into a shop, where the attackers caught up with my police escorts. My security men engaged them until they ran out of bullets. They shot one officer in the leg and took his rifle and uniform.

“They told the policemen they were serving a ‘zoo government.’ So clearly, something is unfolding. They are seizing weapons and collecting police uniforms. I’ve spoken with the state governor, who assured me they will be tracked down. If they are not, it could pose serious danger and threaten the peace we’ve enjoyed in the state for the past three months.

“We’re approaching the Christmas season and our people will be returning home. These attackers must be found because they operate in police uniforms.”

When asked if he believed the attack was targeted, Ngige said it was possible, noting that his convoy and drivers are widely recognised. However, he added that it may have been coincidental, as the group might have simply been hunting for policemen to disarm.

He said:
“My pilot driver is well known. Anyone who sees him knows I’m nearby—he has driven me for 22 years. So on one hand, I could say they recognised my convoy and attacked deliberately. On the other hand, they may not have known; they might just have seen a convoy with police and decided to strike.

“So I’m not saying they specifically targeted me. Anyone who targets me is wasting his time.”
