The donation is the result of the House’s decision to contribute 50% of their salaries for six months, aiming to alleviate the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians. This resolution followed a motion raised during a plenary session.

At Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas addressed his colleagues, stating, “Approximately five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the urgent needs of the Nigerian people. I am pleased to inform you that we have so far contributed ₦704,907,578.82.”

On December 31, Abbas will lead a delegation of House leadership to personally deliver the funds to the president, earmarked exclusively for vulnerable Nigerians in need.

He further emphasized, “The contributions made by our members reflect our commitment to tackling the critical needs of Nigerians.”

This initiative was inspired by a motion presented by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu in July, where the House pledged to donate part of their salaries to mitigate hunger and prevent further protests over governance issues. At that time, Kalu explained, “This government is doing its best, but one year isn’t enough to tackle the country’s challenges. I urge our colleagues to sacrifice 50% of our salaries for six months.”
