In a recent development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly declared an indefinite nationwide strike set to commence on October 3rd. This marks the third time the two prominent labor bodies have initiated a strike under the leadership of President Tinubu. The removal of the fuel subsidy, a decision that the current administration thought would improve the nation’s fiscal health, has since been a source of contention and uproar among a significant portion of the populace.
Previously, the nationwide protest was suspended on assurances from key figures in the administration. Specifically, the national chairman of the TUC, during the last strike’s cessation, highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment and affirmation that the Port Harcourt (PH) refinery would be operational by December of this year.
