In a pivotal move, Abbas Tajudeen, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has officially declared two key seats in the Green Chamber vacant. The two erstwhile occupants of these seats were:
- Tanko Sunono: Previously a notable member of the House, Sunono was appointed as the Minister of State for Education earlier in August. This recent appointment was made by President Tinubu and has seen Sunono shift his attention from legislative duties to his new ministerial role.
- Olubunmi Tunji Ojo: Another significant figure in the House, Tunji Ojo has also transitioned to an executive role, now serving as the Minister of Interior, following his appointment by President Tinubu.
Both members have since assumed their respective offices, leaving their legislative duties behind. As per the constitution, members of the House who take up other significant roles in the government should ideally vacate their seats to avoid conflicts of interest. Given this backdrop, the Speaker’s decision is in line with procedural and constitutional norms.
This development sets the stage for an intriguing political contest in the respective constituencies. It remains to be seen who will step forward to contest these seats and how the constituents will respond to this unexpected change.
