Nigeria’s power grid has experienced another collapse, resulting in the country currently generating only 0.80 megawatts of electricity. By 3pm, electricity generation further decreased to 1,020.08MW before plummeting to 0.80MW by 4pm. The Trans-Amadi Power Plant reported generating the minimal amount of 0.80MW, marking the fourth power grid collapse of 2024.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed dismay over Nigeria’s persistent electricity generation challenges despite its vast size. Speaking during the inauguration of the 31-member Presidential Economic Coordination Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu described the situation as shameful, noting that Nigeria is currently producing only 4.5GW of electricity.
He emphasized the urgent need for innovative strategies to address the nation’s economic issues, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in driving economic reforms. President Tinubu underscored the criticality of energy security, advocating for collaborative efforts to strengthen the oil and gas sector and expand electricity generation and distribution nationwide.
