The endorsement followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest before members of the State Executive Council and top party leaders.

Speaking with journalists, Sanwo-Olu said the decision was collectively agreed upon by all stakeholders present at the meeting.

“We just received Mr Deputy… to inform us of his intention to contest for the seat of the governorship position of the state,” he said.

The governor described Hamzat as highly capable and experienced, expressing strong confidence in his ability to lead Lagos State.

“It was unanimous with all of us to say that Mr Deputy Governor is a man who is fit and well-prepared for this job. He is a man who knows where all the rooms in the house are,” he stated.

Sanwo-Olu also praised Hamzat’s long-standing working relationship with him over the past seven years, highlighting his loyalty, dedication, and integrity.

“He is a man who has worked with me at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support,” he said.

He further acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s role in shaping their political journey, describing him as a key figure behind their rise.

“We thank our father, our leader, Mr President, who saw the vision… that long run is what is already being manifested here today,” he added.

Reaffirming his endorsement, Sanwo-Olu said Hamzat is fully prepared to take over the leadership of the state.

“This is a deputy governor that is worth a governor from day one… we believe that he deserves to be given a chance to go and run this state,” he said.

He added that the decision followed wide consultations with party leaders and government officials, describing the meeting as unanimous and family-oriented.

In recent weeks, Hamzat has also received backing from prominent political figures including Mudashiru Obasa, Femi Gbajabiamila, Tokunbo Abiru, and Wale Edun.

Meanwhile, Obasa, who initially showed interest in the governorship race, is now reportedly shifting focus to contest the House of Representatives seat for Agege Federal Constituency in 2027.

Reports also indicate that Obasa intensified consultations through the revival of the Mandate Group, a political structure linked to President Bola Tinubu.

However, sources suggest that after consultations with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), President Tinubu and key stakeholders have reportedly settled on Hamzat as the preferred governorship candidate.
