BREAKING: SEC Shakes Capital Market With New Minimum Capital Requirement For Operators

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has raised the minimum capital thresholds for all classes of capital market operators (CMOs) nationwide.
In a statement released on Friday, the commission announced that the capital base for Tier-2 issuing houses with underwriting has been increased to ₦7 billion from ₦200 million, while the minimum requirement for trustees has been raised from ₦300 million to ₦2 billion.
According to the SEC, the revised capital requirements are aimed at reinforcing the stability of the capital market and improving investor protection.
The commission added that affected operators have until June 2027 to fully comply with the new capital standards.
