Breaking: Senate Committee Reveals Absence Of Funding Or 2024 Census In NPC Budget

Ningi expressed concern that if funds for the census were not included in the budget, the country could lose over N200 billion, the amount already expended by the National Population Commission in preparation for the census. He assured the committee that NPC would provide documentation the following day detailing the required budget for the 2024 population census.

Senator Olamilekan Adeola, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, responded to the situation by assuring Ningi that the committee would explore avenues to secure funds for the 2024 population census within the budget. He emphasized the importance of the NPC appearing with detailed information about the census requirements.

Adeola stated, “We would like the agency to appear along with the chairman of the committee, with a synopsis of the idea of what is going on about the issue of the census, and whatever the issues are, I can assure you that we will resolve it, and the population census will come up by the first quarter of 2024.”

In a related development, the Joint Committee on Appropriation supported the inclusion of the contentious N1 billion in the 2024 budget of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment. The committee assured aggressive oversight to ensure proper utilization of the funds. The appropriation committee received a report indicating that the N1 billion was intended for maintaining the ministry’s desk office at the World Trade Centre in Geneva, Switzerland, to attract foreign investors to Nigeria.

Despite concerns raised during the budget defense session about the ministry’s plan to spend the money on foreign trips, the joint panel clarified that the funds were meant to promote trade and attract global investors to Nigeria. They pledged to collaborate with the Minister to ensure effective use of foreign services in enhancing Nigeria’s trade interests worldwide.
