Political figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum Chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed, have recently expressed their intentions to offer “purposeful leadership” in the next election. Additionally, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has intensified calls for opposition unity against Tinubu.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, ASELGON’s National President, Albert Asipa, sought to clarify the association’s position, urging the public to disregard any false claims of ASELGON’s involvement in these political movements.

Asipa, a former Chairman of Imeko/Afon Local Government in Ogun State, stressed that individuals and groups misrepresenting the association for political purposes should cease immediately.

“I’ve received numerous inquiries regarding ASELGON’s alleged role in the current political developments. Let me make it clear that our association is neither involved in nor associated with any such political agenda,” Asipa said.

The National President emphasized ASELGON’s primary mission to advocate for the interests of grassroots communities, urging members to remain focused on these goals.

“While we have influence in the political arena, we must not allow ourselves to be manipulated by politicians with self-serving agendas,” he cautioned.

Asipa reiterated that ASELGON’s mission is not to serve any political party but to promote local government autonomy, community development, and mentorship for younger generations.

“Our association is not for sale. Our focus is on grassroots development, empowering youth through mentorship, and advocating for local government autonomy as a means to achieve balanced national development,” he stated.

He reminded members of the significant contributions ASELGON has made to grassroots empowerment and reiterated the association’s commitment to continuing these efforts, particularly as it prepares for the upcoming Jos convention.

In conclusion, Asipa urged unity within ASELGON and called on members to reject any attempts to exploit the association for political gain.
