BRICS Summit: Shettima Returns To Nigeria After Key Meetings With Modi, Okonjo-Iweala

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit held in New Delhi, India.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Shettima participated in high-level sessions at the summit and held several bilateral meetings focused on advancing Nigeria’s economic, diplomatic and strategic interests.

During his visit, the Vice President met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where discussions centred on strengthening relations between Nigeria and India across several key areas. The engagements included renewed crude oil trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, defence, digital technology, fintech, renewable energy and other strategic sectors.

Shettima also held a meeting with the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, during which he reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism and called for a more inclusive global economic system.

At the summit, the Vice President delivered President Tinubu’s message advocating reforms to global governance structures and international financial institutions. He also promoted Nigeria’s position as a strategic gateway to Africa’s growing market under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Nigeria further used its participation in the BRICS summit to strengthen economic and diplomatic relations with member and partner countries, with discussions covering agriculture, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare, energy and human-capital development.

Shettima’s return marks the conclusion of the high-level diplomatic mission, which the Federal Government says was aimed at attracting investment, expanding international partnerships and advancing Nigeria’s economic interests on the global stage.
