It’s essential to note the distinction between BRICS members and BRICS partners. While members have voting rights in bloc decisions and full participation in summits, partners have more limited engagement and can participate in other international initiatives without full commitment to BRICS. However, these new partners hold the potential for future full membership.
During the three-day summit in Kazan, Russia, BRICS nations issued a joint communique addressing various global challenges and advocating for a more equitable international order. The declaration emphasized the importance of a multipolar world where all nations have a voice, particularly calling for increased representation of emerging and developing countries in global institutions.
The document recognized the rise of new centers of power and economic growth, aiming for a more balanced and democratic global landscape that benefits developing nations more than the existing Western-led order.
BRICS also acknowledged the growing significance of regional organizations like the African Union and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, viewing them as vital platforms for economic cooperation and cultural exchange. Additionally, the declaration urged for a strengthened World Trade Organization to address trade disputes and called for an expanded UN Security Council to better represent the Global South.
BRICS stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with recent additions Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
