BREAKING: Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Who Oversaw Annulled June 12 Election, Has Died At 83Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who served as the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) from 1989 to 1993, has passed away. Appointed by then-dictator Ibrahim Babangida, Nwosu oversaw the June 12, 1993, election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. The presidential election was won by Chief Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party, who defeated Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention.

Nwosu’s commission was notable for introducing the Option A4 voting system and the Open ballot system. Despite releasing several election results, he was ultimately ordered by the Babangida regime to halt further announcements.

In July 2024, the House of Representatives urged President Bola Tinubu to immortalise Nwosu, recognizing his role in conducting the election that is celebrated as the most credible in Nigeria’s post-independence era.
