Veteran Nollywood actor, Nkem Owoh, has described the execution of his elder brother, Bartholomew Owoh, during the military regime of General Muhammadu Buhari as one of the most heartbreaking experiences of his life.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Bartholomew was among three young men — along with Lawal Ojuolape and Bernard Ogedengbe — who were executed by firing squad on April 10, 1985, for drug-related offences. The controversial part of their execution was that the crimes were not punishable by death at the time they were committed, but the Buhari-led military government retroactively applied a new decree to impose the death penalty.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s ‘The Interview’ aired on Thursday, April 10, 2025, Nkem Owoh recounted how deeply traumatized he was, revealing that he broke down in tears while at work at the time.

“I was working at Anambra Television then, and I was so furious that I found myself crying along the corridors,” he recalled.

Owoh expressed his outrage over the retroactive application of the decree, which he said unjustly ensnared his brother and others. “What hurt me most was that they adjusted the effective date of that decree just to include people who committed the offences before it even existed,” he said.

Lamenting the injustice, the actor questioned the legal and moral grounds for such a decision: “Why would they backdate a law to execute people who didn’t commit the offence under their regime? It was deeply unfair and bitterly painful.”
