Village head Muhammadu Modi Magajin Runjin Barmo shared the details during a condolence visit by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, and other officials. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 7.
According to Barmo, the deceased included Malam Abubakar, his wife A’ishatu Abubakar, and their five children. They had prepared the cassava for dinner. Although they died after consuming the meal, it remains unconfirmed if the food directly caused their deaths. He noted that the same cassava had been used by several other households in the village without incident.
Commissioner for Health Hajiya Asabe Balarabe stated that the visit was to investigate the cause of the deaths and report back to the governor for further action. Balarabe received the report on Saturday, August 10, prompting her to lead a delegation including directors and the Surveillance Disease Control Unit to assess the situation.
The ministry plans to test samples from a teenager who survived after eating the same cassava to determine if it was responsible for the fatalities.
