This decision contrasts with a groundbreaking ruling by the Vatican on December 18, 2023, permitting Catholic priests to offer blessings to same-sex couples, provided these blessings are not part of regular church rituals, liturgies, or associated with civil unions or weddings. The doctrinal office of the Vatican, approved by Pope Francis, clarified that such blessings did not legitimize irregular situations but served as a symbolic indication that God welcomes everyone.
Despite the Vatican’s approval, the Lagos Ecclesiastical Province bishops expressed unity with the CBCN and the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar on the matter. In their communique, they affirmed the unchanged position of the Catholic Church on marriage, emphasizing it as the union between a man and a woman in a stable and exclusive relationship open to bearing children. Additionally, the bishops reiterated their support for the Church’s teachings on human sexuality. The rejection of same-sex marriage blessings aligns with the broader Catholic Church stance, despite the divergent views and criticisms that arose from the Vatican’s decision.
