Naija News reports that General Musa emphasized that governments at all levels must prioritize policies aimed at ensuring food affordability, education, and social amenities for citizens.
In an interview with Arise News on Monday, the Chief of Defence Staff highlighted that communities where bandits operate largely lack basic amenities. He stressed that poverty and hunger make it easier for bandits and terrorists to recruit youths into their criminal activities.
“For us to find a lasting solution to insurgency, we must have the backing of good governance. Good governance is crucial because when we visit these communities, many are unaware of government presence. There are no roads, no water, no electricity, and as long as poverty and hunger persist, these become tools used to bring people into their fold, making recruitment easier,” he said.
General Musa also emphasized the importance of collaboration with neighboring nations in the fight against insurgency and banditry. This partnership, he explained, would help reduce the flow of small arms smuggled into the country through bordering nations. He highlighted the military’s success in battling insurgency, noting that commanders often thrive in border regions where no man’s land exists between Nigeria and its neighbors.
“I can tell you that on a weekly basis, we are neutralizing them as much as possible. However, the flow of small arms from neighboring countries into Nigeria poses a significant challenge. That is why working together with these countries is crucial,” he added.
