Chaos In Ibadan! Students Shut Down Roads Over Polytechnic Renaming
Commuters were left stranded on Tuesday morning as irate students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, staged a massive protest against the Oyo State government’s decision to rename the institution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The protest, which began in the early hours of the day, saw students block the main entrance of the campus and barricade the ever-busy Sango–Eleyele Road, resulting in severe traffic congestion and halting movement across parts of the Oyo State capital.
The students’ action comes in response to an announcement by Governor Seyi Makinde to rename the school Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan, in honour of Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of the old Oyo State. Notably, Olunloyo, who held office briefly from October to December 1983, was the first Ibadan native to serve as governor.
Despite the gesture being framed as a tribute, the renaming has sparked widespread disapproval among students and concerned citizens who see the move as unnecessary and politically motivated.
According to the Daily Post, the protest also disrupted activities on campus, with staff members unable to access their offices, while long queues of stranded vehicles stretched for kilometres, causing frustration among residents and commuters.
As of the time of this report, the management of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the protest.
