The structure, reportedly intended to be a hotel, is located opposite the Asaba Airport Police Station in Okpanam. It gave way during a prolonged downpour, triggering panic among nearby residents.
Eyewitnesses said several workers were trapped in the rubble, though some were rescued, and search efforts continued into Thursday. While no fatalities have been confirmed, multiple injuries were reported.
According to sources, the collapse occurred just as workers had completed the second floor and were preparing to move on to the parapet level. Some workers managed to jump into neighboring compounds to avoid being buried.
A security officer at the site, who narrowly escaped the disaster, said construction had been ongoing when the incident occurred. He attributed the collapse to the project being rushed by the owner in an attempt to beat the relentless rains.
One of the workers, identified simply as David, confirmed that several laborers sustained injuries while jumping from the second floor. He noted that the wounded had been taken to the hospital for treatment.
“Everyone has now fled the site. Out of fear of possible police arrest, some of those supervising the construction have gone into hiding,” David added.
He also mentioned that residents from the nearby estate helped rescue victims during the chaos.
Efforts to reach the Delta State Commissioner for Urban Renewal, Engr. Michael Anoka, for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages at the time of this report.
