In a shocking and tragic incident, suspected political thugs allegedly linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State targeted the residence of Sheik Ibrahim Jibrin, the Director-General of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Campaign Council in Anyigba. The attack, which occurred at around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, resulted in the tragic deaths of a policeman and four others.

The attackers reportedly took away the lifeless body of the slain policeman, identified as Officer Atabor, and the other victims, who were believed to be on security duty at the time.

According to a statement by Faruk Adejoh-Audu, the spokesperson for the Muri/Sam Gubernatorial Campaign of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), these assailants were described as a “rogue force” allegedly assembled by Governor Yahaya Bello in preparation for the upcoming Saturday governorship election in the state.

Adejoh-Audu disclosed that this “rogue force,” orchestrated by Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bethrand Unuoha on behalf of the governor, unleashed violence upon the home of Sheik Ibrahim Jibrin. The attackers arrived in an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) and engaged in a relentless attack for over an hour, during which several people were shot. Officer Atabor was tragically killed during the assault.

The assailants, who were a mix of thugs led by a wanted criminal named Friday Makama, Mopol officers from Lokoja, and navy mercenaries led by N.U. Akalezi of the Nigerian Navy, forcibly broke down the gate of Sheik’s County home to gain access to the compound. They opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the loss of Officer Atabor’s life, while other guards sought cover.

In addition to the tragic death of Officer Atabor, the attackers also abducted approximately six other individuals, including four policemen who were reportedly on official duty. There are concerns that Comrade I D Ijele, the campaign Head of New Media, may have been among those abducted.

As of the time of writing the statement, the rogue force was still present in Anyigba with the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), indicating a continued security threat.

The Muri/Sam Campaign Council condemned these attacks, labeling them as part of Governor Bello’s strategy to disrupt the election process and suppress voter turnout, especially in Kogi East, where the SDP has substantial support. The campaign council called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to reassign the Kogi State Commissioner of Police to ensure a free and fair election in the state.
