Tinubu Commends Fubara’s Decision To Embrace Peace, Reveals Why He Deserves Praise
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for embracing the peace agreement brokered to resolve the prolonged political crisis in the state.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign event in Port Harcourt, where he praised the governor for demonstrating maturity and respecting the intervention of political elders.
The president specifically acknowledged Fubara’s willingness to accept the reconciliation efforts, noting that his decision to maintain peace despite the political disagreements showed his commitment to democracy and stability.
Tinubu assured the Rivers governor that he would not regret his decision to embrace the peace arrangement.
Addressing Fubara at the event, the president said, “I want to thank you specifically for maturity, understanding, and respect for the wisdom of elders. When we intervened, you respected our position and maintained peace. You are a committed democrat. Fubara, you will not regret what you have done.”
The political crisis in Rivers State began shortly after Fubara assumed office in 2023, following a breakdown in his relationship with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who played a significant role in his emergence as governor.
The disagreement escalated into a prolonged political confrontation, with lawmakers loyal to Wike in the Rivers State House of Assembly making several attempts to impeach Fubara.
The situation eventually prompted President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in March 2025, resulting in the suspension of the governor and members of the state legislature for six months.
The emergency rule ended in September 2025, allowing Fubara to return to office. However, disagreements over the state’s political structure and control continued despite the restoration of democratic governance.
In January 2026, the Rivers State House of Assembly again initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor, although the process was subsequently suspended following renewed reconciliation efforts.
The political tension eventually eased after Fubara abandoned his re-election ambition and withdrew from the APC governorship primary, a decision he reportedly linked to the need to restore lasting peace and stability in the state.
Tinubu subsequently renewed efforts to reconcile Fubara and Wike, leading to an agreement between the two political figures to work together ahead of the president’s 2027 re-election campaign.
The president’s latest remarks at the Port Harcourt event further highlighted his appreciation for Fubara’s role in the reconciliation process and his willingness to prioritise political stability in Rivers State.
