Chelsea Fans Reeling: Maresca Details Why Leeds United Pulled Off Stunning Victory

Leeds took control before half-time with goals from Jaka Bijol and Ao Tanaka, leaving Chelsea on the back foot. Pedro Neto gave Chelsea a brief lifeline shortly after the break, but hopes of a comeback were dashed when Dominic Calvert-Lewin capitalized on a loose defensive pass to seal the victory.

The loss leaves Chelsea nine points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal. Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Maresca did not hide his disappointment.

He said: “It was a very poor night. Leeds deserved to win — they were better in every aspect. We will analyse and learn from this game and focus on the next one. After our goal, we had one or two clear chances, but the third goal ended the game completely, making it much harder.”

Maresca also pointed to the absence of key players as a factor, particularly midfielder Moises Caicedo, who is serving a three-match suspension following his red card against Arsenal, and playmaker Cole Palmer, who is still regaining full fitness after injury.

“I think we missed Moi tonight, and we’ll continue to miss him in the next game. He is an important player. Similarly, even if results were different, we missed Cole and other key players who are vital to our team. Moi is a top player, essential for any team in the world,” Maresca added.

Palmer did appear as a second-half substitute after several weeks on the sidelines.
