In a Tuesday interview with Arise TV, Almona discussed the country’s unfriendly business environment. While she acknowledged the potential opportunities in Nigeria, she highlighted that corruption, inflation, high-interest rates, and unfavorable government policies prevent the youth from taking advantage of these opportunities.

“There are numerous opportunities to drive development in various sectors,” Almona stated. “However, many entrepreneurs face significant challenges due to regulations that hinder rather than promote growth. They struggle with high inflation, limited access to finance, and basic living difficulties, making it tough to operate their businesses.”

She noted that while Nigeria is rich with opportunities in areas such as mining and agriculture, the private sector is often stifled. This has led to companies leaving Nigeria, which increases unemployment as factories close and thousands of jobs are lost.

Almona emphasized the need for the government to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. She remarked on President Tinubu’s speech about harnessing the energy of the youth and creating jobs, questioning the effectiveness of such talks without actionable policies to support business growth.

Regarding the National Youth Conference announced by the President during his Independence Day address, she expressed skepticism about its potential impact without concrete measures to ease business operations. Almona stressed that the core issue in Nigeria remains leadership, stating that effective leadership is essential for addressing the nation’s challenges.

“The problem lies in leadership,” she asserted. “Everything hinges on leadership. With the current economic hardships, we need to see real reforms that can positively impact the private sector and the youth. While the President calls for patience, the reality is that the private sector is struggling, and political elites seem unaffected by the difficulties faced by ordinary Nigerians. This disparity is alarming, and it’s crucial that we support and empower the production sector as much as possible.
